We ran into a hiccup this morning when the roofers started putting the rafters on the training center.  The building is big and if the pillars in the center of the building are not very tall the roof will not have a good pitch and it will have more of a tendency to leak.  The 8 pillars in the center of the building were supposed to be 15 ft 3 inches tall.  Dawda the mason said that they were too tall and he wanted to make them 13 feet.   We called the roofer to get his advice and he sided with the mason and said that the height would be ok.  We tried to get them to leave off one course of blocks on the outside of the building but the mason said that was not how to build a strong building so he added another course to the outside.  We never could get them to understand that the higher the outside walls the lower the pitch on the roof will be unless they raise the center poles.  Well, this morning they realized that the center pillars were not tall enough and the center area will have to have 2 more courses of blocks added after the roof is put on which is going to be a pain for the masons.  We will have to hire scaffolding again and pay the mason extra for doing the work.  The whole thing makes my eye twitch!

When Red stopped by this afternoon to pick up the money for the gravel that he delivered he wanted to know why the rafters were not resting on the lintel and the pillars.  He had also agreed with the mason and the carpenter that the pillars were tall enough.  Oh! Well, it is what it is.

The roofers built a scaffolding system inside the building so that they could have walking boards to access the rafters as they were working.  It took most of the morning to get the scaffolding in place.  It appears to be secure enough for them to walk about up there safely.

It was very hot today; there were only a few clouds in the sky so Steve got all the men ball caps so they could at least shade their heads from the sun.  They thought the ball caps were grand.  Of course we keep them supplied with cold water to drink.

Zorash went with us this morning to the lady’s house that bakes bread.  We order the bread for the seminar.  We ordered 525 loaves of bread.  That sounds like a lot of bread but there will be a bunch of folks at the seminar.  While we were at the bread lady’s house we bought a couple loaves of uncooked bread.  I cut the bread up and fried it sort of like doughnuts; we will have the bread with our supper.

While we were in town we bought turpentine for Mr. Iddrisu and Donkey to use to thin the paint that they will use to paint the facial boards.  Abochi promised that  we would have facial boards tomorrow.  The roofers will work tomorrow because the whole crew are Muslims and Sunday is not a worship day for them.  We are going to try to have everything packed down for them so they will be able to work all day tomorrow.  We are going to visit 2 congregations tomorrow so we will probably be out until the middle of the afternoon.

Have a great day!

Steve and Kandie
