Zorash is still sick; she did not come to work this morning. Meri was back; she said that she did not get to see the doctor yesterday. She said that she sat at the hospital with the other pregnant women but the doctor never came. I asked if she would go back tomorrow and she said that she can only go on the day that is assigned to her so she will have to wait until next week to go. She is getting bigger every day!
This afternoon an older man came to the mission house. We did not know this man and neither did Mr. Iddrisu. The man had a request for surgery and a photo of the lady that needed the surgery. He said that the lady was his daughter and that she was 21 years old. She had been in a motorcycle accident and had broken her back. She needed surgery which obviously the insurance does not pay for. The surgery will fuse several of her vertebrae together; put a titanium cage around her spine and put in some rods. The photo that was taken of her was in the hospital and she has a full cast on one of her legs and what appears to be a partial cast on the other leg. They said that she can move her arms but that she cannot move her legs. It must have been a terrible accident. The father is going around to all the churches, mosques and organizations begging for money. The father said that he had no idea how much money had already been raised nor how much money was left to be found. That makes us a bit leery. He has been raising money for the past 6 weeks. We promised 6,000 Cedis after the rest of the money had been raised. Of course if the family gets close to their target amount we will help with more. Steve told the father that he needs to sit and talk to the doctor and see exactly what the surgery is supposed to do for the lady; he (the father) thinks that she will be able to walk but sometimes no amount of surgery will make that happen.
This afternoon we took baby aspirin to a friend of ours. His doctor told him to take a baby aspirin everyday but none of the pharmacists in Yendi have them so we shared some of ours with him. He was very happy to get them. He is a tailor by trade. On one particularly hot day we went to the market and parked in front of his shop; when we came out of the market we noticed a large piece of fabric draped over our vehicle. We thought that someone was drying their fabric on the vehicle. He came out of his shop, removed the fabric and told us that he was trying to keep the car cool so it would not be too hot for us. How sweet is that?
Take care and have a great day!
In His Service,
Steve and Kandie
