We woke to the sound of rain this morning.  The people here in Accra were so happy to get the rain; they have not had any rain in almost 2 months.  The crops have suffered from the drought.  The southern part of Ghana has a longer growing season than we do in the north.  If the rains come regularly they can grow 2 crops each year.  Maybe the farmers can still make a crop this year.

Since we had an extra couple days in Accra we hired a small car and a driver this morning to take us to Koforidua, the place I call “Bead Land”.  When we heard the rain this morning we were afraid that the bead vendors would not come to the bead market.  We were happy when we got about half way to Koforidua when the rain stopped.  It was still very cloudy, the temperatures were pleasant and there were lots of vendors at the market.  Naturally I bought some beads!  Beads are my “one weakness”!  Ha!

On our way back from Koforidua we stopped at Aburi, the carvers’ village.  I did some Christmas shopping and some shopping for myself.  Wood carvings are my “one weakness”!  Ha!  Finally Steve asked me if we were going to have to buy another bag to put the carvings in.  The good thing about the flight from Accra to Tamale is that there are not really any weight restrictions on the bags; we just pay for the luggage by the kilo.

After we got the bags re-packed we went and change the bulk of the money we will need while we are in Yendi.  We get a much better exchange rate on our dollars in Accra than we do in Tamale.  We don’t like to change the money too early because then we have to haul the money everywhere we go.  Dollars are easier to carry.  While we were out we went ahead and got chicken for supper.

Red called this afternoon and told us that he was already in Tamale.  He said that he came over early so he did not have to get up so early in the morning.  He misunderstood Steve.  He thought Steve told him we were going to be in Tamale at 7:00 in the morning instead of 11:00.  At least we know he will be there on time!

Have a great day!  One more day of traveling and we will be back in Yendi.

In His Service,

Steve and Kandie
