Thursday is the perfect day to come to Yendi because the next day is Friday and the Child Center is not open on Friday which means most of the workers have the day off and we can sleep late without having to man the Child Center. It was lovely to be able to sleep in today. Jet Lag is a real thing and all the traveling caught up with us.
We got all the bags unloaded and most of the things put away. We brought 8 – 50 pound bags, 2 roller bags and 2 backpacks so we had lots of stuff to unpack. When we unpack the bags it is sort of like Christmas because we start packing them as soon as we get back to the states so some of the stuff has been packed for a while and the last time we came I packed 2 extra bags in the hopes that they did not have a limit on the number of bags that we could pay to carry in. We were not lucky so we left 2 behind which we brought in this time.
This afternoon we went to the market to buy eggs, rice, bread, frozen chicken and a guinea fowl. The guinea fowl was already cooked so we only had to make some dipping sauce and open a can of pork-n-beans. Of course because of the high Muslim population here in Yendi the beans have never seen a piece of pork! Pork is taboo for Muslims. Now the Konkomba tribe loves pork meat. It is the best funeral and celebration food hence the reason we serve it at the seminar.
While we were out and about we stopped to greet some of our friends. Everyone was happy to know that we made it back to Yendi safely! Greetings are very important in Ghana. It is customary to greet everyone you meet on the street even if you do not know them.
Mr. Oldman, our neighbor, stopped by for a visit; he wanted to bring Steve up to speed about Ghana’s presidential election. Ghana votes for their president the same year that we vote for ours. The Ghana government had a change of presidential parties just like we did. Mr. Oldman said that everything was peaceful! Steve and Mr. Oldman sat on the veranda to visit. Mr. Oldman said that he could hear me in the house talking to someone; he presumed I was talking on the phone. Steve told him that I was not talking on the phone; I was talking to the monkey! You know these people think we have lost our minds!
Take care and have a great day!

I had the most delicious supper! Mom gave me the wing tip off of the barbecued guinea fowl. I chewed and chewed on it until I had eaten the whole thing, bones and all! Of course the wing tip had been cooked so long that it was crispy. Mom said that she was going to save the other wing tip for me and also the toes from the foot. When they cook the birds they leave the heads attached and they push the feet up through the bird’s mouth. Someone will get a treat! Yum! This time I am the recipient of the treat! The Ghanaians have a proverb that says, “A king that eats a fowl without the head might be eating a buzzard!” They leave on the head so you know what you are eating.
Last night I was a little timid and subdued when the parents brought me into the house but now I am back to my rowdy self! I have been attacking everything; I have been climbing the curtains; I have been bouncing all over the place. Last night I was afraid of the box of toys but today I remembered almost everything that was in the box! I have pulled out most of the stuffed animals and have torn them asunder! I pulled down the curtain in the bathroom because I was climbing on it; I promise it was an accident!
I figured out how to take the close pins off the clothes line that is inside the house; the one Mom uses on rainy days! My mouth is big enough to squeeze the pin together and it will pop off the line. Mom told me to watch out because that pin will pinch my fingers but I don’t believe her!
More guinea fowl please!
Love, Skeeter
