This morning when we went for our walk we noticed there was lots of excitement in the air; the children that were on their way to school were not wearing their uniforms; they were all dressed up in their Sunday best. Many of the children were wearing matching outfits and many were carrying sacks that had cokes, cookies and snacks. Everyone was chattering excitedly. When we got back to the mission house we asked Mr. Iddrisu what was going on. He said that today was the last day of school and the children were celebrating the end of school with a party that they call “My Day”. He said that many of the parents will spend a lot of money to send special treats for their children; some will even share treats with the whole class.
Zorash was not at work today she was doing one of her volunteer things. This one seems to be the silliest thing that she has been involved in. She is on a committee that is sort of “watchdog” committee; the purpose of the committee is to make sure that the contractors who have taken on building projects are building the structures correctly and that they are using the proper amount of cement in the block, the correct number of iron rods in the pillars; the proper size lumber for the roofs etc. What in the world does this committee know about building anything, besides which if they asked the mason how many bags of cement he used to build the block he is going to tell her whatever he wants to because unless you are standing there counting the number of bags that are used and measuring the amount of sand and gravel you have no idea what the contractors are doing. Today was the group’s day to make their reports. I told her that the first thing she should ask the contractor for was a building permit! She laughed and said that no one gets a building permit; it is not their way of doing things.
We finished passing out children’s clothes this morning. We have been sharing clothes for the past 2 weeks. The mothers are always grateful for the clothes. Our thanks go out to those of you who have donated clothes, hats, fabric and time and energy to make clothes.
Amama left work early today because she needed to go to her child’s school to collect the balance of her money. She said that if she does not go today, the last day of school, she will not be able to get the money; I guess it would become a donation to the school.
Our neighbor, Mr. Oldman , came by this afternoon for a visit and to see what we have been doing; he expected to see some work on the training center but we had nothing to show him. While he was here someone from town came to deliver a couple of letters that had been put in his mailbox by mistake. That was very kind of him. His 2 little girls came with him; Steve gave them each a baby doll as a way of thanking the man for his kindness. The girls were beyond excited about the baby dolls; they started squealing and jumping up and down for joy! It made their day and ours.
Thank you for all you do for us! We appreciate the help.
In HIS Service,
Steve and Kandie
