As we drove around town today we could not help but check out the street names that were assigned to other people. The names included Shovel, Shallot, Shea, Soya and Shipper; I guess that Shovel and Bean are not so bad. Ha! It appears that they got an English dictionary and went through it to get the names. I guess it would be a daunting task to have to name all the streets and roads in an entire country. I wonder if the Ghana government is going to use this exercise as a means of accessing property tax. Right now Ghana does not have a formal property tax. It is left up to each District Assemble to access and collect.
The tree trimmer came this morning and we think that he finally finished trimming the trees. We were happy that Nazo was here to help with the cleanup. Steve could not get the blower to start which is annoying because it really helped with the cleanup.
Mr. Iddrisu came back to work this morning but Zorash was not around; her brother’s wife or friend’s wife was in the Yendi hospital delivering a baby and she needed to be there to help care for the woman. Mr. Iddrisu and Zorash usually count the payroll but today Mr. Iddrisu and I counted it. I am proud to announce that everything tallied correctly the first time!
Steve and Nazo are still out in the back field; the tractor that Nazo hired to plow the field is working hard to finish before dark. He still has to do the small field in front of the mission house. Nazo thinks he will be able to finish it today. The field will be easier to plow this year because many of the stones have been removed. Nazo plans to plant peanuts this year and Papa Zachariah the night watchman that is very old is planning on planting okra in the front field. This land is very poor so they have to plant things that do not require much fertilizer. Nazo’s crop of choice is corn but it never does well. The peanuts should do well if Nazo keeps them weeded. They do not call peanuts “peanuts”; they call them groundnuts. Groundnuts make more sense because they grow underground.
Please keep us in your prayers.
In His service,
Steve and Kandie
