The high temperature today was 105 degrees but we don’t have much humidity right now so the heat index was only 112 degrees. It was too hot for man and beast out there today. I felt sorry for Divine and the guy that is helping him haul cement blocks. They have already hauled 300 blocks today and have about 100 more to move. It will be almost dark by the time they finish. Today is the last day for him to haul blocks. I know he is happy with the money he is making but that is a hard way to make a living!
Zorash and I went to the market at noon today looking for a piece of fabric so I can finish the quilt top I have been working on. I thought I was going to expire while we were walking around hunting for fabric sellers. Today is not Yendi’s big market day so many of the vendors had gone to other villages to sell. When we finally found the piece I wanted we had to sit and wait for the shop owner. She had gone to the mosque to pray and the one she left in charge of the shop did not know the price.
Steve and I had to go to town again this afternoon to transfer money to someone that we are buying Chlorine from. We use the Chlorine to treat the rain water. We also bought another 5 gallon bucket of water proof paint.
Mr. Iddrisu did not come to work today; he called and said that they had to go somewhere. Mr. Iddrisu is related to Papa Zachariah the watchman; I think they are cousins. If you remember Papa’s first wife died; traditionally after the funeral the family has to send delegations to thank the important people that attended the funeral. We figure that Mr. Iddrisu was in the delegation. We will have more information tomorrow when he comes back to work.
Zorash checked on Meri today; she still can’t stop coughing. We figure that she has Covid. The first day she missed work was Wednesday so she has several more days to quarantine before we want her to come back to work. There is no testing in Yendi. Meri has 6 kids; by the time it runs through all of them she will be off work for months!
Timothy, the evangelist came to the mission house this afternoon to bring us some water yams (the cheapest, least desirable yams because they cannot be pounded into fufu). We love to fry water yams and make chips; they make a great substitute for corn chips. We have everything we need to make salsa; just no chips. Timothy needed some additional money to buy yam seeds to plant in the mounds he had made in his farm. We decided to help him with the money he needed for the yam seeds in exchange for a few tubers of water yams. He was so grateful for the help.
A new orphan came to us this morning. The caregivers live in Sang about 30 to 40 minutes from Yendi. The baby’s mother died in a village near Kumasi so no one knows what she died from. The little girl was small in size but seemed vigorous. We gave them enough formula to last 2 weeks.
Thank you for helping us help these children.
In His Service,
Steve and Kandie
