Dawda called this morning and woke us up.   He wanted to know if he could come today and plaster the steps that he made against the wall a few days ago.  Of course we told him to come.  He finished about 1:00; they look much nicer now that they have been plastered.  We had a few pop up showers today so we had to scurry around and cover the steps.  While he was here we had him make a few adjustments to the gutter system he made around the Child Center.  Yesterday when it was raining so heavily I walked down to the Center to see how the runoff water was flowing into the gutter.  Everything was rushing along until it came to the portion of the gutter that passes under the cement wall in the front of the Child Center.  The opening was not large enough and the gutter was overflowing.  Today we had him make a bigger opening under the wall and to open a larger place in the gutter system on the outside of the wall.  Another problem that we had was that at the corner of the Child Center the water was bypassing the entrance to the gutter so we had him add a couple blocks to that end to divert more of the water into the gutter.  We can’t wait until the next big rain to see if the improvements helped.

We spent the bulk of the afternoon working on the books; it is nearing the end of the month and we had lots of receipts to enter.  We also have to pay the withholding tax on the extra work we have done and on the cement we bought.

We saw Divine this morning at the doctor’s house just across the lane from the mission house.  He was getting his 3rd anti-rabies shot; we told him to come to the mission house when he got finished.  We needed to talk to him about fully hiring Kwabena, the new night watchman.  We had hired Kwabena before we left on a temporary basis.  We wanted to give him a chance to see if he liked being a night watchman and we wanted to see if we liked him.  He has finished his probationary period and we are satisfied with his work.  We needed to get the OK from Divine and Timothy before we could move ahead with the process.  Timothy and Divine are both board members for the Child Center and we needed to meet with them to make sure they were on board with us hiring Kwabena.   Divine was happy that we were hiring a Christian to fill the position.  Steve had to write a letter of invitation to Kwabena and Kwabena will have to sign an acceptance letter before we can go to the tax and social security offices to get him enrolled.  Steve has the letters worked up.

We spent part of the morning filling out forms for the Social Security office.  Steve called the office to make sure that it was acceptable to use the National Health Insurance Scheme numbers for the beneficiaries that are too young to have Ghana Cards or driver’s license.  The lady he talked to had no idea what was acceptable and what was not; she is supposed to try to find out something.  Another case of “hurry up and wait!”

Have a great day!  Please keep us in your prayers.

In HIS Service,

Steve and Kandie
