Amama did not come to work today.  Her teenage daughter had to go back to the hospital.  This time Amama did not take her to the private hospital; she took her to Yendi’s main hospital.  Last week when she said they were treating her for an ulcer because she was having so much stomach pain I said that I did not think it was an ulcer; we thought that it might be Typhoid.  Typhoid causes sores in the intestines which are very painful; they can even open and cause peritonitis.  Well, guess what they are treating her for now?  You guessed it, Typhoid.  Hopefully they caught it early and she will feel better soon.  That may very well have been what was wrong with her son Bassit.   There is no real good test for Typhoid; they have to go with the symptoms more than anything else.  If they go in with a scope they should be able to see the sores.

Today was wash day and with Amama out of pocket we had to have Meri come up to the house and help.  After we got the laundry and dishes washed we went down to help at the Child Center because Zorash had to go to the hospital to have the wound on her foot dressed.

Divine called and said that they buried his brother.  If you remember, he was fishing and drowned.  He said that they were not going to have the funeral until later in the year.  He said that they would have to wait until the family could organize everything.  They will have to get an animal to slaughter.  Pigs are the meat of choice for the Konkomba tribe, and buy rice and ingredients plus cokes and water for the visitors.  Steve sent some money to Divine to help with the purchase of the casket.   At the moment Divine is all tied up with the upcoming presidential election.  He is some sort of an officer for the man that is campaigning in our area.

Tichak, the watchman, came to the mission house this morning; he was hoping to collect his monthly pay early.  He was sorely disappointed when Steve told him he was going to have to wait until Thursday to get his money.  He said that he did not see what the difference was in getting the money today or getting it on Thursday.  Don’t you wish you could go to your employer and ask to be paid early?

A new orphan came to the Child Center this morning.  The baby was a little girl that was 1 week old.  The nutritional officer from the hospital came with the baby and the lady that is going to be taking care of the baby.  The baby’s mother had a normal delivery and had been sent home.  All of a sudden she started to have severe chest pain and was brought back to the hospital where she died.  We gave them some of the very small baby clothes; the baby weighed 3 kilo (6.6 pounds).

Thank you for all you do for us and the work.

The Monkeyshines

This afternoon Dad took me outside, took my diaper off and let me run free in the trees!  I was having a glorious time until I got hungry!   I know that there is always food in my jail cell.  When we got close to it I just climbed inside, got something to eat and then came back out to play!  I don’t really mind my jail cell; but let’s keep that a secret!  I don’t want the parents to know or they might make me stay in there longer!

While we were outside I helped Dad take the clothes off the line!  I am such a big help with these little odd jobs!  Dad doesn’t think so but where would he be without me?

I was helping Mom wash the clothes when we found out that Amama was not coming for work and Meri was coming to help in the house.  Mom was afraid to leave me in the house while Meri and her little 3 year old boy were in the house too!  Hakim, Meri’s son is afraid of me and Mom did not want to listen to him crying so I had to go back to prison!  At least I was only there for an hour or so.

Free in the trees is the life for me!

Love, Skeeter
