We went out to Kulkpeni for worship this morning. Several of the older men requested for me to come and have a discussion about some ideas that have popped up that needed to be addressed after services with the congregation.
I was asked to teach the bible class when we arrived so I used the lesson I have used in the past month about looking around to see what needs to be done in the Church. I was surprised when I finished the lesson; there were so many follow-up questions asked. Someone suggested they needed someone to go to school to be a preacher /leader at the congregation. It is the thinking of many people here that a diploma from a preaching school makes a person a better teacher/preacher. I think some were shocked when they found out I didn’t have a degree in bible or trained as a preacher. I proceeded to explain that all twelve apostles were unlearned men; Paul, the Apostle was the only exception. They said, well, that was then but times have changed. Where have I heard that before? I guess Satan has done a good job making people think you have to be trained to teach/preach the gospel.
After services, as requested, I discussed with the congregation some of the past events and the ramifications that occurred shortly after Kandie and I arrived in Yendi while Royce and Cindy Reynolds (Kandie’s mom and dad) were still alive. Questions have arisen as to why we don’t do some things like other churches or denominations do in Ghana. One must realize these questions are fielded by first generation Christians in the majority of the congregations that we work with; Kulkpeni is not an exception. There is such a pull to be like everyone else. It is like a teenager telling their parents “Everyone is doing it” when in fact it is not the case. We hope to have given the church members some clarity about the questions that had been asked.
This afternoon Iddrisu and Nazo informed us they had finished hauling the block from Red’s house. What a relief that is. We still do not have any electricity from the light company. On Tuesday it will be 2 weeks since we lost the transformer. When will it come? Only the Lord knows that. We’re just glad to have the generator so the house has electricity otherwise we would not be happy campers!
Tonight at Kulkpeni I provided verses to show the purpose of spiritual gifts and how these gifts proved the words of the apostles were from God and not just a man.
Hope you had a good Sunday! May God bless!
In His service,
Stephen and Kandie Taylor
