The Yendi notes by: Evan Holladay
Today was my last full day in Ghana, West Africa and we had an action packed day. We woke up at 6 o’clock and got in the van to drive for 4 hours to the slave castle but instead of going to the one that Kandie and Steve always go to we went to a different one that is called the Cape Coast slave castle. This one is just as interesting as the other one; we were able to see the dungeons and underground systems where they put the enslaved men and women. They even showed us what happened to you if you fought back and resisted being a slave; that was crazy! Basically they put you in a little cell with no food, no water and no light and wait for you to die! That was kind of unnerving.
After the slave castle we went straight to Kakum, the suspended canopy walkover bridge and this was fun. Just dad and I went on the bridge because the way to get up to the top was more difficult than actually walking across the bridges. The hard part is hiking up a mountain that is very high. The canopy bridges are 40 meters above the ground. Once we got to the top I sped across the bridges. I used to be afraid of heights but now I am not so I just went straight through all 7 bridges; Dad was right behind me. We took a different route to go back down the mountain; I was sure we were lost in the forest but we made it back safely.
After the canopy walkover we got back in the car and drove 4 hours back to the hotel in Accra but at the 3 hour mark we got in the worst traffic I have ever been in. We were stuck for 1 hour and 20 minutes in the traffic. When we finally made it back to Accra we stopped and got pizza and chicken wings from a restaurant and then we walked back to the hotel. This is my final day in Ghana, West Africa. I have loved the trip and the memories I have made I will keep for the rest of my life. I have to give a shout out to my grandparents because I could never do what they do!
Sincerely,
Evan Holladay
Marcus, Kandie , and Stephen
