When we went for our walk this morning we met Dauda, the mason. He wanted to know when we were going to start the next project on the back property. We told him that now that the lease is in place we have to get a building permit before we can start working. He said that he knows the engineer and that he would go with us to the office. We wanted to go this morning but we remembered that it was a holiday so we made plans to go on Monday.
We have been waiting for a pretty sunny day so that we could do the washing. Today was our day. We did 3 loads and the sun held with us all day. I even washed part of the fabric scraps that were left over from the evangelists / church leaders’ shirt project. Timothy was careful to save all the scraps from the shirts he made for them earlier this year.
Francis and Moses, a couple of the church leaders, stopped by at mid morning for a visit. They said that they heard we were back in Ghana. Francis has a motorcycle but Moses does not so they came together on Francis’ motorcycle. Their visit had a 2 fold purpose. They wanted to welcome us back to Ghana but they also needed a little help buying fertilizer for their farms. These men work faithfully for the churches in their areas but neither of them are on payroll. Steve likes to help them when he can. Both men had planted 1 acre of corn; if the crop does well it should be enough to feed them until next year’s harvest. Corn will not grow in this area without fertilizer. They were happy when they left.
Abinata, John Kanbonja’s wife, stopped by this morning too. She cannot speak English and we cannot speak Konkomba but we could tell by her terrible cough and difficulty breathing that she was sick and needed money to go to see the doctor and for medicine. Since today is a holiday none of the workers were here to help us understand exactly what she needed. Steve tried to call Timothy so he could interpret for her but he did not answer his phone. Steve did the best he could and gave her enough money to see a doctor; if she does not have enough to cover all the medicine she will come back with a paper from the doctor and we will help with the rest of the fees.
Steve spent a good portion of the day working on the last chapter in the booklet he is preparing for the monthly evangelist /church leaders’ class. They are using the lessons as he writes them. Once they finish teaching all the lessons he will give them a booklet that contains all the material they have covered. When Steve is not here Timothy teaches the lessons.
The electricity went off at 12:00 last night and stayed off all night. Steve has not had a chance to check the generator to make sure it has oil and water so we did not turn it on last night. Fortunately the weather was cooler and air conditioning was not necessary.
Enjoy your day!
In HIS Service,
Steve and Kandie
