We had lots more mothers in the Child Center this morning. A new mother came with her little girl that has a hair-lip. We had a very difficult time communicating with the lady because she is deaf and she is also illiterate and does not know sign language. Her husband is also deaf. Fortunately she brought a friend with her that seemed to be able to communicate with her a little through primitive signs and some reading of lips. Her friend is going to help her. The baby will be evaluated and then put on the list for the next set of surgeons that come to Ghana to do the lip repair. They do the surgery in stages; first they fix the lip/nose and then after the child gets a little bigger they will do the surgery to close the area in the roof of the mouth. We were so busy that we did not get a chance to take her picture. Maybe next time they come we will not be passing out clothes. Nazo had the worst job this morning; he had to sit outside to control the number of mothers that came into the Center. We got him an umbrella so he would not be in the direct sun.
Steve and Timothy went this afternoon to the motor vehicle office in Yendi and began the process of changing Steve’s motorcycle over into Timothy’s name. They got the bulk of the paperwork done but Steve left his passport photos at the mission house. He is supposed to take them to the office in the morning. It will take several days to get the paperwork back. Even though we have a motor vehicle office in Yendi it is not a complete office and much of the work has to be carried to Tamale to have the “big man” sign off on them. At least we did not have to take the motorcycle to Tamale! Timothy is excited about the new motorcycle. He does not have the money to pay for insurance; we might foot the bill for that expense because we can see where it might solve some problems down the road.
It is trying to rain; we heard a couple of sprinkles so the lights will probably go off in a few minutes. The wind is blowing very hard so it might blow the rain past us. Tichak, one of the night watchmen has already come to work and turned on all the security lights; he does not want to get caught out in the rain.
Shiabu, the electrician came this afternoon to give Steve a list of the materials he will need to re-wire the garage, add switches and a security light. He plans on pulling a new wire from the main. He said that it will take a while to do the job. He usually works alone but he said that he will need a helper tomorrow. I had hoped that he would come in the afternoon after we had closed the Child Center because he always needs something, wire nuts, tape, the drilling machine etc. Steve is usually his assistant.
Oh! By the way, the new toilet flushes like a dream! We are so excited about the new toilet! Isn’t it funny the things that make us happy?
Take care and have a great day!
In His Service,
Steve and Kandie
