Steve had a couple alarms set for 5:45 this morning to be sure that did not oversleep. We were abruptly woken at 5:00am by the sound of the door bell ringing. I went to the door to see what was going on and there stood Papa Zachariah, the old watchman. Papa speaks very little English. He pointed at his cell phone and then at the van and he said, “You go? Time now!” From that broken English conversation I realized that he thought we had overslept and he rang the doorbell to let us know what time it was. It was difficult to go back to sleep. We left the mission house this morning just a few minutes before 7:00. We picked Red up at his house and headed for Tamale.
Once we got to the airport in Tamale we did not have to wait but maybe 2 minutes before we were checked in. We were the first people in line. The plane actually got there early today so we got to Accra a few minutes early. Bismark and Daniel were waiting with a van to meet us when we arrived. It is nice to have a reliable person to call when we get to Accra. We had lots of assistance loading the van and every one that touches the luggage expects a tip. We came straight to the hotel/ apartment and dropped off the luggage. We got something to drink and then went out to hail a cab. The first guy we talked to did not want us to hire him by the hour but the second one thought it was a good idea. If we hire by the hour the driver will take us where we need to go and then wait for us. We had a place to put the things that we buy and I had a place to sit while Steve went into the ministries to take care of the business with the Quota. The Quota secretary told him that even though the borders have opened back up after Covid the visitors are just not coming back to Ghana. The visitors and NGO’s (Non-government Organizations) pour lots of money into Ghana’s economy.
After we finished at the ministries we had a little time to do some shopping. Shopping is my one weakness! We had the taxi driver take us to the cultural center on High Street. I found almost everything on my list and a few extra things for myself that I did not know I “needed” until I saw them! Ha! We are always on the look for something I have never seen before; those items are few and far between. Today we found a hand carved “Moose”. It was carved out of Ebony wood. The antlers were turned sideways and had been repaired but it was obvious that it was a moose.
When we got back to the hotel we went ahead and packed the things that we bought. I still have some poundage left so there might be a little shopping in my future tomorrow!
Thank you for the prayers!
In His Service,
Steve and Kandie
